Bournes of London Projects Division - Replacement Ceiling & M&E Upgrade For Foster + Partners

This prestigious project was carried out in Foster & Partners Main Design Studio in Battersea during the Christmas holidays of 2008.

The existing suspended ceiling components had stood the test of time as it had been in place for some 20 years but was now just showing signs of wear and tear.

The design brief was to basically match the existing with a modern equivalent and provide an enhanced acoustic.

The design & build team acknowledged the principals of the original design and came up with a cost effective solution by using Kvadrat Softcell-Broadline Acoustic Panels installed within the existing ceiling sub frame to achieve a distinct and clean look.

The basis of Soft Cells is a patented aluminium frame with a concealed tensioning mechanism. This ensures the fabric always remains with a perfect surface across the frame, regardless of changes in humidity or temperature

The sustainable design of Soft Cells means they can be rearranged and reupholstered to meet any changing requirements, simply and quickly. In fact 75% of the Softcells installed are fully accessible via specially designed hinges for complete access for any maintenance issues.

In order to be able to install the Softcells over a short period of time, the 1000m2 ceiling was extensively digitally surveyed, from 7000mm within tolerances of 5mm. This provided accurate information for the design and build team to be able to carry out as much work off-site as possible.

Prior to the works being carried out, the whole working area was extensively protected from both dust penetration and or damage from above.

The works carried out involved a complete strip-out of 1000m2 of the existing suspended ceiling followed by the installation of the Softcell-Broadline Panels inclusive of an extensive mechanical and electrical (lighting) upgrade and the installation of a new lighting control management system.

As the ceiling height was some 7 metres above the finished floor level, access to the working area was via a specialist designed lightweight aluminium “birdcage” scaffolding which was erected and dismantled around a full working environment.

The implementation team worked diligently within a tight detailed program and delivered an overall resounding successful project.

All scaffold was cleared in the final 24 hours of the program and a full cleaning regime was maintained throughout.

The Client, Foster+Partners, where able to return to their main Design Studio without any disruption to their normal working environment or business timescales.

The combination of an excellent product and committed management team & workforce, has given our client a product that provides a clean, sharp aesthetic which will also last the test of time as before.

As can only be expected at Foster+Partners.
